We will read an average of 3 to 4 books in a 12 week period, the final books decided on will be up to the learners in the section.
In the first class we will be going over interest and speed of reading. I will offer a list of books for the learners to vote on. My objective will be to create an interest and love of reading before we even start.
By the end of the first class we will know which books we are going to read together (taking in to account any books the learners present might have already read so we don’t repeat on anyone – unless requested).
Books I will recommend include:
Night by Elie Wiesel
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Where the Red Fern Grow by Wilson Rawls
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Wishtree by Katherine Applegate
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
**If a learners has an additional book they want to read, we will discuss it.**
Before we start each book we will discuss the important aspects of the book, anything historic they should know about and any concepts they should be aware of.
It will generally take about 2-4 weeks to complete the book (depending on the size of the book, I will let the learners know how long we will take once we decide on the book and set weekly reading targets).
Each week we will discuss what we have read, I will have questions to ask but generally I prefer to let the learners run the discussion. If movies have been made of the books, we may review scenes from the sections we just read and discuss those as well.
